Senior Grand Final Information

The highly anticipated senior grand finals for football and soccer are fast approaching, with Wednesday June 15th circled in red as an important date on various school calendars. After a week’s break for exams, the teams involved in finals are pumped up and ready to perform well. Details for each match are listed below.

Senior Division 1 Soccer
St Bernard’s v Mazenod
Veneto Club, Bulleen 1:30pm
When these teams last met on May 11th, a 4-4 scoreline was a fitting result for a high standard, attacking game of soccer. Both teams played superbly last week in the semi finals and will have confidence coming into this all important match. St Bernard’s has taken home the cup on five occasions since the competition’s inception in 1978, with their most recent win back in 2008. Mazenod, on the other hand, have come to the big dance a few times but left empty handed. This year, however, could be their best chance ever, as their Year 11 students that make up majority of the squad have won four successive premierships as they moved through from Year 7 to Year 10. Expect a fantastic contest between two very talented and determined teams.

Senior Division 2 Soccer
St Bernard’s v Emmanuel
Veneto Club, Bulleen 11:30am
This year saw a change to the senior soccer structure, with a move to Division 1 and 2 rather than the traditional 1st XI and 2nd XI competitions. Division 2 encompasses three of the lower ranked 1st XI teams and five 2nd XI teams. The grand final sees the St Bernard’s 2nd XI take on the 1st XI from Emmanuel. The premiership has only gone one way since 2007 – straight to Essendon, although it was only two years ago that Emmanuel tasted premiership success at the top level. The match promises to be a high quality affair and is sure to be enjoyed by the spectators in attendance.

Senior Division 1 Football
St Joseph’s v Parade
Elsternwick Park, Elsternwick 2pm
St Joseph’s has been a football juggernaut for many years and that good form has continued in 2016. They won last year’s final by less than a kick over Whitefriars and accounted for them once again in last week’s semi final. St Joseph’s come into this match as hot favourites, with loads of finals experience and a keen drive to succeed. Their only defeat for the year came at the hands of their grand final opponent, Parade College, with the boys from Bundoora accounting for the Geelong crew by 10 points back in round 5. Although Parade come into this match as the underdogs with a 4-3 win-loss record for the year, they will certainly have the belief that they can win against St Joseph’s and will play their hearts out as they look to win their first senior footy cup since 2009.

Senior Division 2 Football
CBC St Kilda v De La Salle 2nd XVIII
Elsternwick Park, Elsternwick 12pm
Much like the equivalent competition in soccer, Division 2 in senior football is a mix of 1st and 2nd XVIII teams. As fortune would have it, these two teams are yet to meet this season, so the result is wide open. CBC finished 2nd on the ladder, losing only to St Bernard’s in round 2. They easily accounted for third placed Salesian in the semi final match and would be confident going into the big match at Elsternwick as they aim for a big “three-peat”. De La Salle 2nd XVIII finished in fourth position, but played superbly to knock off the top placed St Bernard’s team on their home deck last week. De La has not won a footy flag at senior level since they took home both Div 1 and 2 trophies back in 2008. No doubt they will keen to make this opportunity count. A huge finale awaits!
