HERALD SUN SHIELD CHAMPIONS!!!!

The ultimate prize in school football is remaining in the ACC for another year as St Bede’s College secured the 2019 Herald Sun Shield. Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham hosted the grand final, which from the first bounce was intense right through all four quarters of the game. St Patrick’s Ballarat was the opponent that St Bede’s faced in this matchup. St Patrick’s have a rich history in the HSS and are an extremely tough competitor to any school within the shield.

A solid win by St Bede’s in the Semi-Final of the shield and an extremely successful season in the ACC competition, had all the players in the side anticipating this game in its lead up to the first bounce.

The conditions for the game were ideal for football but the conditions don’t mean much as both sides were relentless with their pressure causing the contest to provide constant “Hot Footy” situations. The first quarter ended with St Bede’s ahead 1.2.8 to St Pat’s 0.5.5. St Bede’s were able to open up the game slightly in the second quarter kicking 2.3 to St Pat’s 1.2. At the break the scores were 3.5.23 to 1.7.13. The third quarter saw St Pat’s surge back into the game and with a goal just before the three quarter time siren, the margin had been cut to five points. St Bede’s 4.8.32 to St Pat’s 3.9.27.

The intensity ramped up going into the final quarter. St Bede’s put some daylight between the sides scoring the one and only goal of the quarter. Fantastic clearance work around the ground along with solid defending helped them to hold off any of St Pat’s surges throughout the quarter.

Final Scores: St Bede’s 5.10.40 def St Pat’s Ballarat 3.10.28

Congratulations to all involved from St Bede’s on a fantastic achievement. This is the first time St Bede’s has won the Herald Sun Shield.
